Geometry

GEOMETRY (412266CW)

Semester Course (1 unit)

NCAA Core GPA Approved

This course number is for students who have successfully completed both Foundations of Algebra and Intermediate Algebra.

The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences from the middle grades. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. Geometry and Intermediate Algebra may be taken concurrently if needed, but this is not recommended.

Graphing calculators will be used extensively and students should have their own graphing calculator. If purchasing a calculator, the TI-84 contains the features needed for all courses except AP Calculus or AP Statistics. This is also the calculator used for demonstration purposes in classes. Students will not be allowed to use a TI-89, TI-92, TI-Nspire CAS or other comparable calculators that utilize symbolic manipulation. Only AP courses use the Nspire-CAS calculator.

Calculator rentals are available through the math department. See a math teacher for questions.

GEOMETRY CP (412220CW)

Year Course (1 unit)

NCAA Core GPA Approved

The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences from the middle grades. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. The critical areas of study are organized into six units of studies as follows: Congruence, Proof, and Constructions; Similarity, Proof, and Trigonometry; Extending to Three Dimensions; Connecting Algebra and Geometry through Coordinates; Circles with and without Coordinates; and Applications of Probability. Geometry and Algebra 2 may be taken concurrently, but this is not recommended.

GEOMETRY HONORS (412220HW)

Year Course (1 unit)

NCAA Core GPA Approved

This course is a fast paced in depth and enriched study of two and three dimensional geometry. Various techniques of proof are emphasized extensively. Real-world applications and modeling are included throughout the course. Enrichment activities will be provided and independent study/research may be required. Geometry and Algebra 2 may be taken concurrently if needed, but this is not recommended.

NOTE: Students who wish to apply for the Governor’s School for Math and Science Accelerate program in Pre-Engineering should take both Geometry and Algebra 2 (Honors recommended) in the 9th grade.

Graphing calculators will be used extensively and students should have their own graphing calculator. If purchasing a calculator, the TI-84 contains the features needed for all courses except AP Calculus or AP Statistics. This is also the calculator used for demonstration purposes in classes.
